Food Tech #400

This course is designed to help students make educated decisions regarding food, meal management, and food habits.  In this hands-on course, students will examine the history of food, contemporary attitudes towards food, wise consumer decisions, changing consumption patterns, the ways that food and technology have been paired to meet our needs and the roles that food plays in our lives.  We will work to gain basic skills surrounding food preparation.

Foods for Fun & Profit #405

Would you like to gain culinary skills and try your hand at competitive business? This course provides experiences in food preparation and food service through labs, projects, and consumer driven operations. Students will critically analyze food-related issues that apply to social functions, business management and government regulations. Skills in mathematics, communication, creative thinking and entrepreneurship are reinforced in this course. Students will examine careers related to the hospitality and tourism industries. Advanced food preparation techniques will be developed through studies of food presentation, meal planning for nutrition, recipe creation and food science experiments.

Prerequisite: Food Tech #400 or instructor’s approval.

Child Development #415

How does play, guidance, human interaction, impact the learning and growth of a child? Activities in this course will be devoted to the study of the developing child from prenatal development through childhood.  Physical, emotional, intellectual, and social development of children will be studied.  Students will be involved in organizing, planning and carrying out activities for elementary children.  Childcare skills will be demonstrated during time spent in elementary classrooms.  We will study childcare programs, history, health & safety, guidance strategies, and brain development.  At the end of this course, students who have completed all expectations and met all requirements will be eligible for certification through the state of Wisconsin as Assistant Child Care Teachers. Each qualified student will receive their ACCT certification as recognized by the state of Wisconsin and is available for juniors and seniors who take this course.  This course qualifies for transcripted credit at Western Technical College

This class is a hands-on, project-based class that examines our surroundings and how we live our lives working with our surroundings. Students will explore housing, interior design as well as the elements and principles of design.  Students will apply knowledge and consumer awareness through multiple housing design projects. This course will involve understanding of housing floor plans and arrangements, and application interior design.

Textiles, Fashion, & Clothing Design #430

This is a hands-on, project-based class that examines clothing and textile options, as well as the elements and principles of design.  Students will apply knowledge and consumer awareness through multiple textile, clothing, sewing, and design projects. This course will involve understanding of fabrics and fibers, fashion, clothing roles, and basic sewing construction.
